Sydney again ranked world’s best city

Sydney was today ranked the number one city in the world for a record ninth time in the Conde Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards in New York.

The magazine asked its readers to score cities on a variety of criteria, including ambience, friendliness, culture/sights, restaurants, lodging and shopping.

“Our readers are among the most discerning and affluent US travellers and they subscribe to us for our fiercely independent assessment of destinations, summed up by our motto – truth in travel,” the magazine’s editor-in-chief Tom Wallace said. “And the fact is they consistently rank Sydney number one.”

NSW tourism minister Sandra Nori, who picked up the award in New York, said the accolade was a tribute to the people of Sydney and the city’s international marketing.

Nori said NSW registered four million visitor nights from US tourists in the year to June, contributing an estimated $780 million to the state’s economy.

Over the past decade, Sydney has received more than 50 tourism awards.

The award ceremony was attended by a range of US celebrities, including property tycoon Donald Trump who described Sydney as a deserving winner.
