Qantas plans 2007 long-haul Jetstar launch

The Qantas group plans to launch Jetstar long-haul international flights “no later than January 2007”.

QF ceo Geoff Dixon said routes would be announced in mid 2006.

Destinations will be Asia Pacific cities within six to 10 hours of Australia on point-to-point routes, and further expansion will include European destinations.

Dixon denied Jetstar would compete with Qantas for routes, claiming QF mainline operations “are and will remain our primary focus”.

“Our aim for the group is to expand in our traditional markets with Qantas and to expand in new markets with the most suitable product, be it Qantas or Jetstar,” he said.

Long-term plans see Jetstar operating a fleet of 60 narrow- and wide-body aircraft across its international and domestic network within five years. The carrier will have a two-class configuration, with economy and 'StarClass' (premium economy) cabins.

The Qantas board will meet on December 14 to consider Jetstar’s international fleet plan.
