Base Backpackers set for expansion
 
Accor’supmarket youth hostel concept Base Backpackers could expand overseas from its Australian and New Zealand base.

The hotel group’s Asia Pacific md Michael Issenberg told the Australian Financial Review the group has had inquiries from developers in South Africa, Canada and Paris wanting to introduce the upmarket backpackers hostel brand.

He also said that Accor was interested in opening a Base Backpackers in France and in the UK.

Issenberg claimed the hotel group was considering expanding the Base brand further into markets such as Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The firm confirmed that it had done research in the Thailand market, but had not identified any potential launch sites.

Base is also said to be considering expansion into the US.
